In a sparse London flat, two young boys struggle to deal with the death of their mother. Their father, a scruffy yet well-meaning academic, can offer little help; imagining only a future of ineffectual visitors and empty sadness. Then suddenly, into their lives comes a crow. Part babysitter, part jester and part villain, the bird seems attracted to the families' grief. He declares that he will stay until his charges no longer need him.
Peckham-based solo-artist and former Maccabees keyboard player Will White has created a score of original music to accompany Max Porter's award-winning book. Echoing the novel's themes and his own experience of losing his mother as a child, the music is a shattering blend of ambient noise and gentle folk exploring grief, memory and healing.
It presents us with a storm-laden visage of the British landscape, where, despite the haunted desolation, it's still possible to find hope glittering from among the hedgerows.
